"When are you speaking to Haim?" an inquiry reads. "My request was to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

However, there remains a single issue: The sender also wants to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are in plentiful company. A host of famous fans have openly coveted the role.

The evidence suggests something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award hopefuls.

Like all the most iconic ensembles, they're a close trio. Their visuals frequently show them walking in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such pure exuberance you inevitably think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "It is the ultimate honour. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire young girls to make music."

"So anyone is invited to be the next part of the family."

Award Milestone

The group have called into a break, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I watch the lists every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the honor resonates with the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge achievement," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the women that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The project was born from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that unique transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The words detail breakups and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.

"I adore summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to make an effort in ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That newfound toughness required a fresh approach – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that began with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Camaraderie

The band's openness shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating misadventures.

One man ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Path

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their standing in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international fan base.

But the band will consistently be their primary priority.

"We have been playing music since I was little," shares Alana. "There is no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
